Whats New in Minecraft 14w19a - Spectator Menu, New Border Settings

Posted in minecraft

This weeks snapshot is a small one but that's no surprise after last weeks epic update. Most of you remember the introduction of sticky slime blocks last week? 14w19a weighs in at the lightweight level offering us a small collection of features such as the 'quick n dirty' Spectator Menu and new World Border settings.

Meanwhile at Mojang..

Whilst Dinnerbones been busy on 14w19a, Jeb's been quietly updating MCPE to include some fantastic features too. MCPE now includes Strongholds and long last, with tweaks to the mob spawner so Silverfish appear in strongholds too. We've covered more about MCPE in our other post.

14w19a - Features List

  • World border is now the same size in Nether as the Overworld
  • Portals must be inside the border, whether in Nether or Overworld
  • Visible feedback if players get close to a shrinking border
  • New settings to control how borders damage players

How does the Spectator Menu work?

The spectator menu uses the standard inventory slots to provide a quick and easy menu system. This probably saved Dinnerbone time having to design a specific menu just for Spectactor mode - a wise choice to give us the new feature sooner!

Because it uses the same inventory slots the keyboard keys are still "wired" up to those slots when you're in Spectator mode. Spectator's obviously have no inventory so pressing the numeric keys highlights a particular menu option, whilst a double press selects the option.

Note: the Spectator menu will probably changed in future snapshots, but for now here's how to use it:

1. Players press a numeric key to highlight a command. In this example number 1 is the "Teleport to player" option:

2. A second press of the same key opens the menu option

3. Players can select one of the player icons to teleport to that players location

4. Menu option 9 exits the current menu and moves you back up a level.

List of all Spectator Menu options:

Teleport to player - pretty obvious, teleport to a particular players location.

Teleport to team - similar to above but sub categorizes players into groups, once you select a team you'll see all members of that team.
