Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition has been officially released and we've created a FAQ list for those of you playing the game. Does the Xbox version use my gamer tag or Minecraft user name? Do I need gold membership for multiplayer? Which version number is the Xbox version? All answered here..
Does the Xbox version use my gamer tag or Minecraft user name?
The Xbox version of Minecraft uses your Xbox gamer tag for multiplayer. This is the tag you choose when you first signed up for an Xbox Live Account. It is NOT your Minecraft user name. The reason for this is because multiplayer games are played over the Xbox Live network and not independent servers (who use Mojang for login checks). On the Xbox, you'll notice that you need to invite other players to your 'party' by selecting their gamer tags from your friends list.
Do I need gold membership to download Minecraft?
No. You only need the Silver membership type to download and play Minecraft (single player and local split screen). Silver membership is FREE. A silver membership also gets you a gamer tag, access to other marketplace games including demos and DLC.
Do I need gold membership for multiplayer?
A Gold membership is required to play games online via Xbox Live. Even though Minecraft is a marketplace game it still abides by the Xbox Live rules. Gold membership is around $8 a month (roughly) but you get secure, reliable online gaming from Microsoft.
Do I need a HDMI cable for splitscreen?
Yes. If you want to enjoy splitscreen multiplayer then you'll need to get yourself a HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable. Don't waste your money on the super gold plated ones, just get a trustworthy one from amazon. Sadly, not all Xbox 360 consoles have a HDMI port but most new modules should do. Check the back of your Xbox and TV for HDMI ports, they're thin little ports.
Which version of Minecraft is the Xbox version?
According to the official xbox magazine, the Xbox version of Minecraft is comparable to Beta 1.6.6. This version was before the big adventure update but does include a sizable amount of features. The late Beta days were some of the best for Minecraft so choosing 1.6.6 is a solid choice for the Xbox edition of the game. You can expect to see a variety of mobs, blocks and items to craft. Including passive mobs such as cows and chickens, aggressive mobs such as skeletons and creepers. Other crafting items such as boats, rails, armour, weapons and TNT are included in the Xbox version.
How can I change my skin?
Currently, you can't change your skin. You'll get the default skin types. In later updates you'll be able to download additional content including texture packs, skins and possibly even mods. It all depends how the mod API turns out from Jeb and the rest of the development team.
How can I run faster?
The Xbox version of the game doesn't include the sprint feature that was added to the PC version in 1.8. Sprinting was one of the many features added during the adventure update. Don't worry though, 1.6 isn't that far off 1.8 so we can expect to see this soon.
How can I join another persons game, a random person?
The quick answer is - you can't. Unless of course, you're friends with the other person who is hosting the server. You both need to be friends so they can add you to the Xbox party. This is how multiplayer works on the Xbox version of the game. Some players are posting their Xbox gamer tags to the minecraft forum which is a great way to make new Minecraft friends and start playing online. Just beware that griefers are everywhere!
Can I download a demo/trial of the Xbox version?
Yes, there is a trial version of the game. You can download the trial from the Xbox marketplace in the same way.
What are the best achievements to get?
There are currently about 20 achievements included in the Xbox version of the game. Most of the achievements are quite easy to achieve. They include:
Monster Hunter - Attack and destroy a monster
Getting wood - punch a tree to gather wood
Taking inventory - open your inventory
The better (and harder) achievements to gain include:Into the Nether - construct a Nether portal
Dispense with this - construct a dispenser
When pigs fly - ride a pig with a saddle and then get hurt from fall damage (i.e. jump off a cliff!)
On a rail - create a minecart and travel at least 500m
The lie - bake a cake
Which things are not included on the Xbox version?
So far, and remember it's early days, these things are not included on the Xbox version:
- Pistons
- Silverfish
- Shears
- Endermen
- Cave Spiders
- Fence Gates
- Glass Panes
- Melons
- NPC Villages
- Critical Hits
- Charging Bows
- Food Meter
- Experience Orbs
- Ender Pearls
- The End
- Enchantments
- Potions
- Enderdragon
- Animal Breeding
- Jungle Biome
- Ocelot
- Golems
Updates are expected as frequently as the PC version so it won't take long before a lot of these things are added to the game.
That's it for this QA session so go enjoy a fabulous Xbox game..
