After the initial launch of ITIL v3 we expected ITIL 4 to make an appearance sometime in 2011. Come the summer of 2011 and there's no ITIL 4 but instead we have ITIL 2011 - a major update to the ITIL framework that addresses errors and inconsistencies.
ITIL 2011 was officially released to the public in July 2011. Hard copies of the ITIL books and their electronic counterparts are now widely available to download. These include downloadable PDF books and online subscriptions.
Unlike the jump from ITIL v2 to ITIL v3, ITIL 2011 does not contain new modules. Instead, ITIL 2011 contains improvements and additions to the core modules of; Service Strategy; Service Design; Service Transition; Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement. Workflows have been simplified, explanations are more concise and ambiguous examples removed or replaced.
This new ITIL publication was spurred on by the direct feedback from the ITIL community and contains the combined improvements from over 500 suggested changes. These changes have come from real world ITIL practitioners and ITIL trainers who use ITIL on a daily basis.
ITIL 2011 improvements
- Resolving errors and inconsistencies in the core text and diagrams of previous ITIL versions.
- Improvements to publications raised in the Change Control Log and recommended by the change advisory board.
- Improvements based on feedback by the training community
- A complete review of the Service Strategy publication (which contained the most ambiguous concepts) to produce a more concise and accessible guide.
All of the core ITIL modules are still relevant including
- Service Strategy
- Service Design
- Service Transition
- Service Operation
- Continual Service Improvement
