Minecraft 1.3 is only days away now and Jeb's just released two more Minecraft snaphots for week 30. 12w30d was supposed to fix the Ender Dragon Egg teleportation issue whilst adding new rotatable logs. Unfortunately, it messed up cocoa plants so Jeb opted for another snapshot, 12w30e. You can download the latest snapshot here.

Rotatable Wooden Log Blocks - New Feature

If you download 12w30e you'll be treated to the new rotatable log block. It's a Minecraft first and opens the door for many new rotatable blocks in the future. It's more of a decorative feature than a functional improvement but it's still cool.

How do you make a rotatable block?

Well, it's just your usual log block that's placed onto the side of another block. Just like cocoa plants that are placed on the side of trees. If you place the block directly on the floor then the tree rings will face upwards. But if you place the block onto the side of another block, the tree rings will face you (protruding sideways).
