Minecraft is a fantastic game and its even better when played online. We really love the ability to host your own Minecraft server by simply downloading the server program. However, not all servers are particularly good, there may not be enough players online, the uptime might be bad and servers come and go quite regularly.

We take a look at the most popular Minecraft servers and give you their IP addresses and links. However, before we start we thought it would be worth explaining what is meant by uptime and what a Minecraft server actually is.

What is uptime?

Uptime refers to the length of time the server is active and accessible. This is always a % of the amount of total time the server has been around. So if a server had been around for 10 hours but 1 of those hours it was unavailable, then the uptime would be 90%. If you're playing online games then an uptime of 90% is ok but not great. For a server to be considered good then you need to look for at least 90% uptime if not more.

What is a Minecraft server

The Minecraft servers are actually computers which have the Minecraft server program running on them. They are the fundamental element of multiplayer games and are sometimes referred to as hosts. The Minecraft server program receives and dispatches all communications to and from other players. This can include things such as player location, map changes etc. It's kind of like a hub where information flows in and out. As you can imagine if the server is down (not accessible) this information stops flowing and the game either lags or ends.

Servers need to be high powered computers with plenty of RAM and CPU resources. They also need to be connected to a meaty internet connection such as cable or business level broadband. The better the server connection the better the gaming experience for all players.
